FORT WORTH, Texas – Aug. 16, 2021 – Alfred Vidaurri Jr., a Freese and Nichols, Inc., Vice President/Principal, is the new president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Vidaurri is the first Latino president in the organization’s history. NCARB supports the 55 U.S. architectural licensing boards in their mission to protect public health, safety and welfare.
“I am honored to be the first Latino president in this organization’s 102-year history,” Vidaurri said after being inducted at the 2021 Annual Business Meeting. “But I look forward to the day when we no longer have to call out the first, or the second, or the third, but can celebrate the vision and leadership of the individual.”
During his term as president, Vidaurri intends to focus on an architecture licensing model that supports greater equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to meet the needs of the future. He plans to use his platform to navigate change by hiring a diversity consultant and board governance consultants to work with NCARB and best position the organization as it steps into its second century of service. Under his leadership, NCARB will host a series of town hall listening sessions within the next 60 days to identify and address the barriers and opportunities related to EDI.
“This is a heavy lift to take on,” Vidaurri said. “However, I am eager to continue the good work that NCARB has accomplished and successfully grow its services by following American architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham, who said, ‘Make no small plans; for they do not have the ability to stir men’s hearts.’ ”
Vidaurri is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Institute of Certified Planners, U.S. Green Building Council, Texas Society of Architects, AIA Fort Worth and the National Organization of Minority Architects. He was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2015 and was awarded the NCARB President’s Medal for Distinguished Service in 2014.
