SUMMARY:WIN Small Business Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Come have a discussion around the table with Alyce Jones and Melanie Jones (mother and daughter) to hear each of their small business stories. Learn why they started their businesses in Fort Worth\, challenges they have overcome and we'll have a time for discussion around the table. Marilyn Gilbert\, EVP Marketing at the Fort Worth Chamber\, will moderate the discussion.\n \n\n\nAlyce (left) has owned and served as President & Chief Executive Officer of Adair Visual Inc. (Adair Eyewear) since 1980. Alyce was born and grew up in Fort Worth\, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University where her professors suggested that she attend law school.\n\n\n\nAlyce began pursuing her Master's degree in Criminology. Upon realizing she had a passion for healthcare\, Alyce began to think about changing her focus and accepted an unpaid internship with an Ophthalmologist. That summer\, Alyce knew that she had discovered her passion! Shortly thereafter\, she began pursuing a degree in Opticianry. Alyce received her degree and in 1980 opened Adair Visual\, Inc.\n\n \n\nSince then\, Alyce has continued to pursue excellence and has studied with Tuck School of Business WBENC Executive Program\, TCC's FastTrac Growth Venture program\, and is certified with DFW and Love Field NCTRCA (North Central Texas Regional Certification Agency) She has served on numerous boards and is presently a board member of the Women?s Center\, a member of Texas Women for the Arts and a patron of The Modern Art Museum.\n\n\n\nMelanie (right) Raised in a successful family business\, educated by prestigious institutions and inspired by creatives - Melanie Jones understands that small details matter. She is the owner Properly Wrapped\, a local gift wrapping service in Fort Worth\, Texas.\n\n \n\nA Fort Worthian born and raised\, Melanie left behind the bright city lights of New York to return home in 2007. She had just completed getting her Bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California and an Associate's degree from Parsons School of Design. Upon her return she worked in her mother's business\, Adair Eyewear. However\, she missed the small unique boutiques of New York and California.\n\n \n\nIn 2010\, she opened Prim & Proper Gifts. A feminine gift boutique that was for the modern\, but southern woman with an affinity for color and design. Melanie carried candles\, clutches\, jewelry\, paper goods and assortment of other little sweet somethings to gift personally & properly. She began to notice that the wrapping paper wasn't selling and began offering to personally wrap gifts to complete the Prim & Proper gift for her customers. That was the beginning of Prim & Proper Gifts transitioning to Properly Wrapped\, the gift wrapping service.\n\n \n\nToday\, Properly Wrapped is a business that is about the personal touch\, creating lasting impressions and fostering meaningful relationships. The goal is to make sure that anyone can make a lasting impression - one properly wrapped gift at a time. Though Melanie's business has changed over the years the principles and the foundation remains the same. Shop small/local when possible\, little details matter\, and every gift should have a personal touch.
