Fort Worth native Dave Oliphant shares history about Fort Worth and Texas jazz musicians. During his presentation, Oliphant will talk about Texas jazz musicians, primarily those from Fort Worth, and play recordings by a variety of musicians to demonstrate the major developments, many led by Texas musicians. He will also read some of his own poetry that celebrates Texas jazz recordings.
Dave Oliphant was born in Fort Worth in 1939 and is the author of three historical studies of Jazz, including Texan Jazz(University of Texas Press) and The Early Swing Era, 1930 to 1941(Greenwood Press). He also edited a volume of essays on Jazz entitled The Bebop Revolution in Words and Music. His most recent publications on Jazz include KD: A Jazz Biography (2012) and The Hero’s Fall I Fell For: Jazz Poems (2017). For thirty years, he taught and/or edited a scholarly journal at The University of Texas at Austin.
