The Southside Culinary Arts Retail Entertainment and Service Fund offers $250 relief grants to Near Southside creatives, gig and service workers that are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. The fund was made possible by a $10,000 matching funds lead gift from Marilyn and Marty Englander, owners of Kent & Co, and other community leaders who stepped forward to assist those in need. Since launching this week, the Southside C.A.R.E.S. Fund has raised nearly $35,000 and applications are already being serviced with checks in the mail. The fund relies on community contributions to serve applicants, and a waitlist of applications is being served as quickly as funding becomes available. You can double your impact by making a financial gift to support those in need via PayPal phone app @southsidecares or by visiting wegetbytogether.com
We’re good at coming together for a cause. But in times like these, we need to do more than unite with each other. We need to unite for each other.

WHO CAN APPLY?
With many of our district’s retailers, restaurants, bars, breweries, entertainment venues, and events closed or operating at reduced capacity, Near Southside creatives, gig and service industry employees are facing significant financial impacts. These important professionals have served on the front lines of the Near Southside’s revitalization as the friendly faces of our most beloved businesses and experiences. So much of the Near Southside’s culture and prosperity has been made possible because of their everyday contributions. While many still await assistance from PPP, EIDL, unemployment, or a simple return to work, their need for essential purchases and payment of monthly bills continues to apply financial pressure.
Any person currently employed, or previously employed in the Near Southside immediately prior to COVID-19, facing a financial hardship in the following professions:
· Culinary professionals including kitchen staff, cooking schools, food truck operators, brewers, distillers, restaurant management, self-employed food entrepreneurs and other food-based positions
· Art professionals including artists of all media, arts educators, and non-profit arts professionals. Artists who are self-employed may apply if they are a resident of the Near Southside district.
· Retail professionals in customer service and management
· Entertainment professionals including musicians, actors, comedians, sound technicians, lighting, stage management, recording and talent booking
· Service industry professionals including restaurant and bar front of house staff, service providers such as health instructors, stylists, and service managers
· Other, if we have somehow omitted your profession but you believe it should be included in the spirit of this grant, please apply and share the specifics of your role in the Near Southside for our review.
Applicants must demonstrate a professional connection to the district and provide a simple statement of need. Qualified applicants will be eligible for a one-time grant of $250. All applications received will be evaluated for need and funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
