Liven up your lunchtime by watching crazily costumed adults kick cans across Sundance Square Plaza while indulging in sanctioned cheating and bribing of the judges. It’s the zany annual Kick the Can relay races kicking off Tarrant Area Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive and guaranteed to elicit laughs.
Teams from 22 businesses, a school and a choir will kick (or otherwise propel) empty cans back and forth across the plaza. Cheering squads and costumed mascots will urge on their favorite teams while a longtime local radio announcer gives a running commentary on the races and wacky antics of the teams.
Humorous Kick the Can awards encourage team shenanigans. Although the head judge for the competitive relay races is the Honorable Brent Carr, Tarrant County Criminal Court #9, bribing the judges with gifts and monetary donations to Tarrant Area Food Bank is officially approved. The best bribe is recognized with the Let’s Make a Deal award.
Many teams indulge in cheating for the honor of winning the Outside the Box (most inventive cheating) award. Other awards include Didn't Win but Made Us Grin, Cute to Boot (best costume) and Oops! (a near miss or minor mishap on the race course due to the unpredictable path of airborne empty cans).
A Tarrant Area Food Bank truck will be on site to accept donations of most needed nonperishable foods: canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats and fish, hearty soups, peanut butter in plastic or metal containers, cereal, boxed pastas, rice, flour and other staples.
