The Desegregation of Public Libraries in the Jim Crow South: Civil Rights and Local Activism
Although much has been written about the Civil Rights Era, there has not been a lot of discussion about the desegregation of public libraries or the activists involved. Mr. Wiegand and his wife, Shirley Wiegand, focus on “local stories to identify broader patterns of struggle” (LSU Press Blog). Using primary sources, the book traces the “the struggle for equal access to public library services to the years before the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision” (LSU Press Blog) all the way through “the eventual desegregation of Jim Crow public libraries” (LSU Press Blog).
